ROUND 1: KYALAMI
The opening race for the ProSeries 2020 GT3 racing championship was held at historic Kyalami race circuit in South Africa. A very fitting start to the series as this is a South African only racing cup. Division qualifying for the race took place on Saturday.
Spanning three timed events of 30 minutes each, heats of 30 drivers set hot laps to determine which racing division they would compete in, either Pro, ProAm or Am. As was to be expected the PRO field was stacked with some of South Africa’s top Sim racing talent.
The ProAm field was filled with up and coming racers wanting to prove themselves and make it into the Pro division, while the Am division saw some new drivers to the competitive Sim racing scene mixing it up with the rest of the amateur racing division.
Race day presented the drivers with fine racing conditions, presided over by commentators Ernest Page, Tasmin Pepper and Marius Joubert, supported by technical commentator Jonathan Bentz.
The Amateur drivers were first onto the circuit, followed by ProAm and then the Pro division.
Apart from racing incidents affecting the middle order, there were no serious crashes in the Pro division, ensuring that the finishing order of the top three was not affected. The top spot for the Pro division was taken by Z. Essa, J.Absmeier and M.Mcoll. In the ProAm division, we saw a runaway victory by J. Isherwood, followed by L. le Roux and D. Miller. We look forward to our next event which takes to the Silverstone track on the 17th of May.
